Dr. Marlowe wanted it done quickly, so she brought four of the school’s male employees out with shovels to fill in the ditch. Corliss and Donna had taken Michael Brewster under the fence to show him the exact path they had followed to get to the mall below. They then told him all they had discovered on their second trip.

Dr. Marlowe called in the security company that had installed their cameras and had them add what was necessary to cover the area at the rear of the building. She also had the old lock on the rear kitchen door replaced with the security card lock. Everything was done in a matter of hours. In the meantime, Donna and Corliss were told to return to their rooms to await further instructions. Their parents were informed and were on their way to Spindrift. They were to be taken home until hearings would be conducted regarding their futures at the school.

They hadn’t been in their rooms a half hour, however, before they were called back to Dr. Marlowe’s office. Awaiting them in the office was Mayfair’s father. Corliss thought he was thinner than she had imagined him to be from Mayfair’s descriptions, and although he was good-looking, he didn’t have that inner strength she could easily see in her own father. There was something fragile about him.

Donna thought he looked a bit pale and fragile as well. She and Corliss looked at each other, both thinking it was no wonder Mayfair’s stepmother got her way so often. They recalled how Mayfair had described what went on at her home and how she could count on the fingers of one hand how many times her father had sided with her and not with her stepmother.

“Girls, this is Mr. Cummings, Mayfair’s father. He has asked to speak with you.”

Donna and Corliss sat and looked at him with identical expressions of disapproval as he turned in his chair to face them. He fidgeted with his shirt cuffs.

“I understand you two were Mayfair’s best friends here,” he began.

“Are,” Donna said.

“Pardon?”

“We still are her best friends,” Corliss said. Neither she nor Donna smiled. They looked like they would eat him alive.

He glanced at Dr. Marlowe, who nodded for him to proceed.

“Have you any idea where she might be? We’re very worried. I’m not going to punish her or anything. I just want to know she’s safe, and so do her mother and sister,” he added.

“We thought she said her mother had passed away, Mr. Cummings,” Donna said.

Anyone observing this scene who didn’t know the facts would easily think Mayfair’s father was the one who had broken the rules of Spindrift.

“Her stepmother,” he said, visibly annoyed at having to make the connection. “She’s just as worried as her real mother would be. Do you know where she is?” he demanded.

“No, Mr. Cummings. The young man she met and went off with somewhere is apparently a stranger not only to us but also to people who live in Piñon Pines,” Corliss said.
